How to Celebrate National Tequila Day

How to Celebrate National Tequila Day

With our love of Taco Tuesdays comes margaritas and inspired cocktails (when we aren’t working on Wednesday).  Something has finally gone right in 2020, because National Tequila Day is on a Friday! If you’re tired of things being cancelled we’ve rounded up some ways for you to celebrate during the new normal.

Get It To Go

Sulmona  brings Italy to Kendall Square, and makes cocktails that you can bring home.  You can come back during Phase 4 to enjoy the ambiance inside, (and that 30 seat bar) but don’t worry if the patio is full. The look of their to go pouches might remind you of the juice boxes you enjoyed as a kid, but the contents will not!  To bring you the best NTD ever, they’ve created a special Peach Margarita. Peaches fresh from New Jersey are macerated in tequila to give you unreal flavor.  Photo credit: @sulmona608

Palomas on Glass Patios

We’ve had lots of members ask us when we’ll be back in our favorite spot, The Palm’s Glass Patio.  Answer: as soon as they let us.  While we wait, the Palm is offering a Paloma cocktail special.  With seating outdoors, and on the open air glass patio, they’re ready to welcome you back.  Indulge in The Palm Paloma - Casamigos Tequila, Q Grapefruit, and lime.  We can’t send over chicken parm sliders, but it is on the menu.  Photo credit: @thepalmboston

The New Niño in Town

Our friends at the Beehive and Beat Brew Hall launched a new concept just before quarantine, Cosmica, in the south end, adjacent to the Revolution Hotel. Enjoy the taqueria menu to go, or on their luscious patio. You may have cancelled your travel plans, but head on over for Cosmica’s vacation cocktails.  From boozy slushies (and the frozen mango margarita that does not need a description) to the Beach Body cocktail, The Freddy which features jalapeno infused tequila, and the Bad Hombre, then menu will take you to another state - just be sure to have a DD drive you home.

Try Tequila’s Cousin

Bacanora is a type of mezcal from Sonora, a state in northwest Mexico, except it's a whole lot less smoky than most mezcals. Still made with agave, (but not limited to blue agave like tequila) if you see it on a cocktail menu, don’t think, just drink.  You can find raspberry infused bacanora on the cocktail menu at Railstop Boston.  If you’re looking to get out of the city (sort of) head over to Brighton to sit on their patio.   Located in the previous site of Brighton Station, their impressive interior boasts Boston’s only barrel aged cocktail bar, and their menu focuses on comfort food well done. If you don’t have time to join them for brunch this weekend, they also celebrate Taco Tuesdays. Photo credit: @railstopboston

Craft Your Own Cocktails

If you were baking bread during quarantine, surely you can handle making brunch.  If space in your place permits, invite a few friends over or meet outside.  Even better: plan a virtual brunch and impress your guests when you teach them how to make these.

The Bloody Maria is where tequila meets the Bloody Mary.

What you need:

  • 2 ounces tequila

  • 1 teaspoon horseradish

  • 3 dashes Tabasco sauce

  • 3 dashes Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 dash lime juice

  • 3 dashes celery salt

  • 3 dashes pepper

  • 6 ounces tomato juice (more or less to fill glass)

  • Garnish: stuffed olives

  • Garnish: celery stalk

  • Garnish: lemon and/or lime wedge

  • Garnish: cucumber and/or cocktail shrimp

How to Make It

Build the ingredients in a highball glass over ice cubes.

Top with tomato juice.

Mix well by rolling back and forth from one glass to another. With Bloody Maria’s, it’s all about the garnishes, so get creative and fill the glass!

The Tequila Sunrise is easy to make, and oh so pretty in your glass

What you need:

  • 1/2 ounce grenadine

  • 1 cup ice

  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila

  • 1/2 ounce triple sec

  • 1 ounce orange juice

  • 1/2 ounce sour mix

  • Garnish: lime wheel

  • Garnish: salt (for rim)

How to Make It:

Gather the ingredients listed above

Rim a tall glass with salt by running a lime wedge around the rim and then dipping it into a shallow dish of salt.

Pour the grenadine into the glass. Let some run down the side inside the glass as that will enhance the blend of colors. (and make you look like a pro!)

In a blender, add the ice, tequila, triple sec, orange juice, and sour mix.

Blend until smooth.

Pour the contents of the blender into the prepared glass and stir slightly so the colors begin to mix.

Garnish a lime wheel or a mixture of seasonal fruits.

Enjoy!

Please remember to celebrate responsibly - in 2020 that means face coverings in public and not driving after drinking.
